Charles Sobhraj, born on April sixth, nineteen forty-four, is a notorious French serial killer, fraudster, and thief. His criminal activities primarily targeted Western tourists traversing the hippie trail in South Asia during the nineteen seventies. With a unique heritage of Sindhi and Vietnamese descent, Sobhraj earned infamy through his cunning and charm, which he used to manipulate and deceive his victims.
Known as the Bikini Killer due to the attire of several of his victims, he was also referred to as the Splitting Killer and the Serpent, a nod to his remarkable ability to elude law enforcement. It is believed that he was responsible for the murders of at least twenty tourists across South and Southeast Asia, with fourteen of those occurring in Thailand alone.
After being convicted and imprisoned in India from nineteen seventy-six to nineteen ninety-seven, Sobhraj returned to France upon his release. However, his criminal journey did not end there; in two thousand three, he traveled to Nepal, where he was arrested, tried, and sentenced to life in prison. On December twenty-first, two thousand twenty-two, the Supreme Court of Nepal ordered his release due to his advanced age, leading to his deportation back to France just two days later.
