Charles T. Kowal

Charles T. Kowal, born on November eighth, nineteen forty, was a prominent American astronomer whose contributions significantly advanced our understanding of the Solar System. His career spanned over two decades at Caltech's Mount Wilson and Palomar Mountain observatories, where he served as a staff astronomer from nineteen sixty-one to nineteen eighty-four.

During his tenure, Kowal made remarkable discoveries, including the identification of 2060 Chiron, the second-largest centaur. His keen observational skills also led to the discovery of two moons orbiting Jupiter, alongside numerous asteroids, comets, and supernovae, showcasing his versatility and expertise in the field.

In recognition of his outstanding contributions to astronomy, Kowal was awarded the prestigious James Craig Watson Medal in nineteen seventy-nine. His legacy continues to inspire future generations of astronomers and enthusiasts alike.
