Charles the Bold

Charles Martin, known as Charles the Bold or the Rash, was born on November tenth, fourteen thirty-three. He ascended to the title of Duke of Burgundy in fourteen sixty-seven, becoming the last ruler from the House of Valois-Burgundy. As the only legitimate son of Philip the Good and Isabella of Portugal, Charles inherited a legacy of power and ambition, which he pursued vigorously throughout his reign.

During his rule, Charles sought to expand his influence and establish an independent kingdom stretching from the North Sea to the borders of Savoy. He engaged in a successful revolt against King Louis XI of France in fourteen sixty-five, showcasing his determination to assert his authority. His marriage to Margaret of York was a strategic move to forge an alliance with England, while he also arranged the betrothal of his only child, Mary, to Maximilian of Austria, further solidifying his political ambitions.

Charles was not only a formidable politician but also a passionate patron of the arts. His court became a renowned center for music and illuminated manuscripts, reflecting his love for culture and chivalry. He was meticulous in governance, issuing numerous ordinances that detailed military, legislative, and diplomatic matters. A devout man, he held Saint George as his patron saint and declined several requests for a crusade against the Ottoman Turks.

In the latter part of his life, Charles faced the challenges of the Burgundian Wars, a multi-national conflict that ultimately led to his downfall. After a series of defeats, including the battles of Grandson and Morat, he was killed at the Battle of Nancy on January fifth, fourteen seventy-seven. His death marked the end of the Burgundian State and initiated the War of the Burgundian Succession, leaving his daughter Mary as the last of his dynasty.
