Charles the Child

Personal Facts, Age, Height and Biography of Charles the Child

Charles the Child, born in eight hundred forty-seven at Frankfurt am Main, was the second son of Charles the Bald and the brother of Louis the Stammerer. His reign as King of Aquitaine began in October eight hundred fifty-five, a strategic appointment by his father aimed at quelling the separatist sentiments in Aquitaine. The region had previously seen unrest, with the Aquitainians seeking a ruler from Louis the German's lineage, leading to a complex political landscape.

Initially, Charles the Child's authority was severely limited. Unlike his predecessors, he did not possess the power to govern in person, nor did he have a chancery to issue royal decrees. The rights of Aquitaine were firmly held by Charles the Bald, which left Charles the Child and his brother without the means to bestow privileges or manage royal properties. This power vacuum allowed the local nobles to gain significant influence during their father's reign.

As he matured, Charles the Child attempted to assert his authority. In eight hundred sixty-two, he defied his father's wishes by marrying a widow named Humbert, a decision that would later lead to conflict with Charles the Bald. The following year, his father forced him to abandon his wife, reasserting control over his son's life. Tragically, in eight hundred sixty-four, Charles suffered a severe injury during a hunting accident, which left him mentally incapacitated.

Charles the Child's reign was marked by instability and external pressures, culminating in his death in eight hundred sixty-six at Buzançais. He passed away childless and was laid to rest in Bourges, leaving behind a legacy overshadowed by the political machinations of his time.
