Charles Vane

Charles Vane, an infamous English pirate, made his mark during the Golden Age of Piracy, primarily operating in the Bahamas. Although the exact details of his birth remain shrouded in mystery, his early ventures into piracy began under the command of the notorious Henry Jennings. Vane participated in Jennings' audacious attack on the salvage camp for the wrecked Spanish 1715 Treasure Fleet off the coast of Florida, which set the stage for his future exploits.

By the year seventeen hundred and seventeen, Vane had risen to prominence, commanding his own vessels and becoming a notable figure within the notorious Flying Gang in Nassau. His reputation was marked by a blend of charisma and cruelty, as he was known for his brutal treatment of captured sailors, often resorting to beating, torturing, and interrogating them to extract information.

In seventeen hundred and eighteen, Vane made a surprising decision to cease his piratical activities, publicly declaring his intention to accept a King's Pardon. However, this change of heart was short-lived, as he and his crew, including the infamous Edward England, returned to their life of piracy just months later.

Vane's fate took a dramatic turn in February seventeen hundred and nineteen when he was caught in a fierce storm in the Bay Islands, leading to his marooning on an uncharted island. His luck ran out when a passing British ship discovered him, resulting in his arrest and subsequent transport to Port Royal. There, he faced trial and was ultimately hanged in March seventeen hundred and twenty-one, marking the end of a notorious chapter in the annals of piracy.
