Charles Wilson Cross

Charles Wilson Cross, born on November thirtieth, eighteen seventy-two, was a prominent Canadian lawyer and politician. He began his legal studies at Osgoode Hall Law School in Ontario before making his way west to Edmonton, where he established his law practice. His political career took off with the Liberal Party of Canada, and he played a significant role in the formation of Alberta in nineteen oh five.

Upon Alberta's creation, Premier Alexander Cameron Rutherford appointed Cross as the province's first Attorney-General. His tenure was marked by controversy, as he became implicated in the Alberta and Great Waterways Railway scandal, leading to his resignation in nineteen ten alongside Rutherford's government. Despite this setback, Cross continued to be an influential figure in provincial politics.

After serving as a backbencher, he emerged as the leader of the Liberal opposition against Arthur Sifton, who succeeded Rutherford. In nineteen twelve, Sifton reinstated Cross as Attorney-General, a position he held until nineteen eighteen when he was dismissed by Charles Stewart after failing to respond to a resignation request. Although his influence waned, Cross remained active in provincial politics until nineteen twenty-five.

Following his provincial career, Cross transitioned to federal politics, winning a seat in the Canadian House of Commons. However, his political journey came to an end when he was defeated in his re-election bid in nineteen twenty-six. Charles Wilson Cross passed away in nineteen twenty-eight, leaving behind a complex legacy in Canadian politics.
