Charles X Gustav

Charles X Gustav, born on November eighth, sixteen twenty-two, was a prominent monarch of Sweden and a member of the Wittelsbach dynasty. He was the son of the Duke of Zweibrücken-Kleeburg and Catherine of Sweden. Following the death of his father, he succeeded him as Pfalzgraf, marking the beginning of his significant political journey.

His marriage to Hedwig Eleonora of Holstein-Gottorp produced a successor, Charles XI, ensuring the continuation of his lineage. Charles X Gustav was the second king of Sweden to bear the name Charles, following the childless Christopher of Bavaria, and he was the first monarch of the Swedish Caroline era, which flourished during the latter part of his son's reign.

During his rule, he played a crucial role in the Second Northern War, expanding the Swedish Empire and solidifying its power in the region. Before ascending to the throne, he was recognized as the de facto Duke of Eyland (Öland) under his predecessor, Christina. Additionally, from sixteen fifty-five to sixteen fifty-seven, he claimed the title of Grand Duke of Lithuania.

Interestingly, his designation as Charles X was a product of a sixteenth-century invention, as one of his predecessors, Charles IX, had chosen his numeral based on a fictitious history of Sweden. Although Charles X Gustav was the fourth actual King Charles, he has never been referred to as Charles IV.
