Charles X of France

Charles X of France, born on October ninth, seventeen fifty-seven, was a prominent politician who ascended to the throne as King of France on September sixteenth, eighteen twenty-four. He was the younger brother of Louis XVI and Louis XVIII, and an uncle to the uncrowned Louis XVII. Following the Bourbon Restoration in eighteen fourteen, Charles emerged as the leader of the ultra-royalists, a faction that staunchly supported absolute monarchy and opposed the liberal concessions of the constitutional monarchy.

His reign was marked by significant events, including his coronation in eighteen twenty-five, where he attempted to revive the royal touch, a traditional practice believed to cure ailments. Charles's government took controversial steps, such as reimbursing former landowners for the abolition of feudalism, which strained relations with bondholders. His administration also increased the influence of the Catholic Church and reinstated capital punishment for sacrilege, leading to tensions with the liberal-majority Chamber of Deputies.

In an effort to divert attention from domestic issues, Charles approved the French conquest of Algeria and imposed a hefty indemnity on Haiti for recognizing its independence. His political decisions culminated in the appointment of a conservative government under Prince Jules de Polignac, which faced defeat in the eighteen thirty legislative elections. In response, Charles enacted the July Ordinances, disbanding the Chamber of Deputies and imposing press censorship, which ignited urban riots in Paris.

The unrest ultimately led to the July Revolution of eighteen thirty, forcing Charles to abdicate the throne. He was the last ruler from the senior branch of the House of Bourbon and spent his final years in exile. Charles X passed away in eighteen thirty-six in Gorizia, then part of the Austrian Empire, leaving behind a complex legacy of royal ambition and political turmoil.
