Charles Joseph Crist Jr., born on July 24, 1956, in Pennsylvania and raised in St. Petersburg, Florida, is a prominent American attorney and politician. He graduated from Florida State University and later earned his Juris Doctor degree from Samford University. Crist's political career began in the Florida Senate, where he served from 1993 to 1999, before moving on to hold various significant positions, including Florida education commissioner and attorney general.
In 2006, Crist was elected as the 44th governor of Florida, defeating Democrat Jim Davis. His tenure was marked by a notable run for the U.S. Senate in 2010, where he initially led in polls but ultimately lost to Marco Rubio after leaving the Republican Party to run as an independent. Crist's governorship ended in January 2011, but his political journey continued as he joined the Democratic Party in 2012.
After endorsing President Barack Obama for reelection, Crist announced his candidacy for governor again in 2014, though he was narrowly defeated by Republican Rick Scott. In 2016, he made a significant comeback by winning a seat in Congress, representing Florida's 13th congressional district and becoming the first Democrat to do so since nineteen fifty-five.
In the 2022 Florida gubernatorial election, Crist was the Democratic nominee, resigning from Congress to focus on his campaign, but he faced a significant defeat against incumbent Ron DeSantis. Most recently, on June 7, 2023, he was nominated as U.S. ambassador to the International Civil Aviation Organization, although his nomination lapsed without action by the Senate.
