Charlotte Corday

Marie-Anne Charlotte de Corday d'Armont, known as Charlotte Corday, was born on July twenty-seventh, seventeen sixty-eight. She emerged as a significant figure during the tumultuous period of the French Revolution, driven by her strong beliefs and political convictions. As an aristocrat and a sympathizer of the Girondins, Corday opposed the radical Jacobins, led by Jean-Paul Marat, whom she held responsible for the violent September Massacres of seventeen ninety-two.

On July thirteenth, seventeen ninety-three, Corday made her way to Paris with a singular purpose: to confront Marat. Gaining an audience with him while he was in a medicinal bath, she seized the moment and fatally stabbed him. This act of assassination was not merely a personal vendetta but a calculated move to save the Revolution from what she perceived as the Jacobins' dangerous radicalism.

The aftermath of Marat's assassination was swift. Corday was arrested, tried by the Revolutionary Tribunal, and executed by guillotine on July seventeenth, just four days after her fateful act. Her legacy was later immortalized in Jacques-Louis David's famous painting, The Death of Marat. In eighteen forty-seven, writer Alphonse de Lamartine posthumously dubbed her l'ange de l'assassinat, or the Angel of Assassination, highlighting the complex nature of her actions and their impact on history.
