Chely Wright, born on October 25, 1970, is a multifaceted American artist known for her contributions as a singer-songwriter, musician, and activist. Raised in Kansas, she nurtured her dreams of becoming a country music star from a young age. However, her journey was complicated by her early realization of her homosexuality, which clashed with her Christian upbringing and aspirations. Despite these challenges, she moved to Nashville after high school, where she began her career in music.

Wright's rise to fame began in the 1990s when she signed her first recording contract with PolyGram/Mercury Records. Although her initial albums saw limited success, she achieved her breakthrough with the hit single 'Shut Up and Drive' in 1997, followed by the chart-topping 'Single White Female' in 1999.
