Cheng Yen

Cheng Yen, born on May fourth, nineteen thirty-seven, is a prominent Taiwanese Buddhist nun, teacher, and philanthropist. She is best known as the founder of the Buddhist Compassion Relief Tzu Chi Foundation, commonly referred to as Tzu Chi, which has become a leading humanitarian organization in Taiwan and is recognized globally for its extensive charitable work.

Raised in Taiwan during the Japanese occupation, Cheng Yen developed a deep interest in Buddhism as a young adult. In nineteen sixty-three, she ordained as a Buddhist nun under the guidance of the esteemed master Yin Shun, who was a significant proponent of humanistic Buddhism. Her journey into philanthropy began after a poignant encounter with a woman who had suffered a miscarriage, coupled with discussions with Catholic nuns about their charitable endeavors.

In nineteen sixty-six, inspired by her experiences, Cheng Yen established the Tzu Chi Foundation. What started as a small group of thirty housewives pooling their resources to assist needy families has blossomed into one of the largest humanitarian organizations worldwide. Tzu Chi's mission has expanded to encompass medical care, environmental initiatives, and disaster relief, making a profound impact on countless lives.
