Cheoljong of Joseon, born Yi Won-beom on June seventeenth, eighteen thirty-one, ascended to the throne as the twenty-fifth monarch of the Joseon dynasty following the death of King Heonjong in eighteen forty-nine. Chosen by Queen Sunwon, he was adopted as the heir to her late husband, King Sunjo, at the tender age of nineteen.
Despite his royal status, Cheoljong's reign was marked by significant challenges. He was a great-great-grandson of King Yeongjo and grew up in poverty, which shaped his perspective and governance. Throughout his rule, he struggled to exert political influence, as the Andong Kim clan, the maternal family of Queen Sunwon, held the reins of power. This monopoly led to widespread corruption and discontent among the populace.
The discontent culminated in a series of peasant revolts in southern Joseon in eighteen sixty-two, highlighting the growing unrest during his reign. Tragically, Cheoljong's lineage faced misfortune, as all of his sons died in infancy, leading to his succession by a distant relative, Gojong, upon his death on January sixteenth, eighteen sixty-four.
