Childebrand I

Childebrand I, born in the year six hundred ninety-five, was a notable figure in Frankish history, serving as a duke and a feudatory. He was the son of Pepin of Heristal and Alpaida, and the brother of the renowned Charles Martel. His life began in Autun, a city that would also mark his passing.

As a duke, Childebrand was granted the region of Burgundy by his father, a position that allowed him to play a significant role in the military and political landscape of the time. He is particularly remembered for his contributions to the expulsion of the Saracens from Francia, where he, alongside his brother, successfully captured Marseille, a key city that remained under Umayyad control.

Childebrand's legacy extends beyond his military exploits; he was also a patron of the continuator of the Chronicle of Fredegar, a historical text that provides insight into the era. His son, Nibelung I, also shared this patronage, indicating a family commitment to the preservation of history.

There is some debate regarding Childebrand's familial ties, with some scholars suggesting he may have been the half-brother of Charles Martel through their mother. Additionally, the exact date of his death remains uncertain, with sources varying between the years seven hundred forty-three and seven hundred fifty-one.
