Chilperic II of Burgundy

Chilperic II of Burgundy, born in the year four hundred thirty-six, was a notable sovereign and a king's son of Gondioc. His lineage was marked by a complex web of power struggles and familial conflicts, particularly following the deaths of his father Gondioc and his brother Chilperic I. Historical accounts suggest that the four sons of Gondioc initially shared a common rule, residing in various cities, but the dynamics of their governance were fraught with tension.

According to Gregory of Tours, Chilperic met a tragic end, reportedly killed by the sword and subsequently thrown into a well alongside his wife by his brother Gundobad. This act was part of Gundobad's ambition to consolidate his empire. The aftermath of this violence saw Chilperic's daughter, Clotilde, inciting her son Chlodomer to seek vengeance against the Burgundians, further entangling the family in cycles of retribution.

Recent scholarship has cast doubt on the traditional narratives surrounding Chilperic II's death, suggesting that he, along with Godomar, may have died around four hundred seventy-six or seventy-seven. This challenges earlier assertions that he perished in the year four hundred ninety-three amidst internal power struggles in Burgundy. The historical record remains murky, with the exact dates of death for the sons of Gondioc still unclear.

Chilperic's legacy includes his daughters, one of whom, Crona, chose a life in the monastery, while the other, Clothilde, would go on to marry Clovis, the Frankish king. This alliance was significant, as it occurred during a time when Clovis and Godegisel united against Gundobad, further intertwining the fates of these royal families.
