China Zorrilla

China Zorrilla, born on March 14, 1922, was a celebrated Uruguayan actress whose influence spanned theater, film, and television. Renowned for her captivating performances, she became a beloved figure in the Rioplatense cultural scene, often referred to as a 'Grande Dame' of South American theater.

Her illustrious career began in the 1950s and 1960s in Uruguay, where she made a significant mark in the theatrical landscape. Zorrilla later moved to Argentina, where she thrived for over thirty-five years, becoming a household name across various media, including television, theater, and cinema.

In recognition of her contributions to the arts, Zorrilla was honored as Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres by the French Government in 2008. Her legacy continued to be celebrated in her home country, with the Correo Uruguayo issuing a series of commemorative postage stamps in her honor in 2011.

After a remarkable career that included more than fifty appearances in film and theater, Zorrilla retired at the age of ninety, returning to Uruguay, where she passed away in 2014. Her impact on the performing arts remains indelible, inspiring future generations of artists.
