Chioma Ajunwa, born on December twenty-fifth, nineteen seventy, is a distinguished Nigerian former track and field athlete and football player. She made history by becoming the first Nigerian to win an Olympic gold medal at the nineteen ninety-six Summer Olympics in Atlanta. Furthermore, she holds the remarkable distinction of being the first black African woman to achieve this feat in a field event.
In addition to her athletic prowess, Ajunwa is a member of the Nigerian Police Force. She is unique in her accomplishments, as she remains the only woman to have competed at both the FIFA Women's World Cup as a footballer and the Olympics as a track and field athlete, showcasing her versatility and dedication to sports.
In December two thousand seventeen, Ajunwa took a significant step towards nurturing future talents by launching the Chioma Ajunwa-Okpara Foundation. This initiative aims to discover and support new Nigerian stars in sports. In collaboration with the Abia State government, the foundation sponsored an Under-sixteen Athletics Championship for Secondary Schools in March two thousand eighteen, further emphasizing her commitment to the development of athletics in Nigeria.
