Chiung Yao

Chiung Yao, born Chen Che on April 20, 1938, in Chengdu, Sichuan, is a celebrated Taiwanese writer and producer. Her pen name, derived from the Classic of Poetry, signifies 'splendid pure jade,' reflecting her impactful contributions to literature and media. In 1949, during the tumultuous period of the Chinese civil war, she relocated to Taiwan with her family, a move that would shape her future career.

Chiung Yao emerged as a leading figure in the realm of Chinese romance novels, gaining widespread recognition with her groundbreaking work, Outside the Window, published in 1963. This success led to a significant partnership with Ping Hsin-tao, the owner of Crown magazine, whom she later married. Together, they established production companies that adapted her literary works for television and film, marking a pioneering effort in cross-strait collaboration.

Her novels resonated deeply across the Chinese-speaking world and Southeast Asia, particularly during the late twentieth century. Chiung Yao's storytelling not only captivated readers but also launched the careers of numerous actors. Among her many adaptations, My Fair Princess stands out as one of the most-watched Chinese television dramas of all time, solidifying her legacy in the entertainment industry.
