Chris Chelios, born on January 25, 1962, is a celebrated American former professional ice hockey defenseman and restaurateur. Renowned for his exceptional career in the National Hockey League (NHL), Chelios is a three-time Stanley Cup champion, having secured victories with the Montreal Canadiens and the Detroit Red Wings. His journey through the NHL saw him don the jerseys of the Canadiens, Blackhawks, Red Wings, and the Atlanta Thrashers.
Chelios made history as the oldest active player in the NHL during the 2009–10 season when he was called up from the AHL's Chicago Wolves to play for the Thrashers. His remarkable career is highlighted by numerous records, including the most games played by an active player at one thousand six hundred fifty-one and the most career playoff games played at two hundred sixty-six. He is tied with the legendary Gordie Howe for the most NHL seasons played, with twenty-six.
On May 1, 2009, Chelios achieved a remarkable milestone by appearing in the playoffs for an NHL record twenty-fourth time, missing the playoffs only once throughout his extensive career. Despite holding the record for the most career postseason losses, with one hundred seventeen, he only experienced one Game 7 loss, a narrow three to two overtime defeat in the 1985 Adams Division Finals against the Nordiques. In 2017, he was honored as one of the '100 Greatest NHL Players' in history.
Of Greek heritage, Chelios has a familial connection to the sport through his cousin, Nikos Tselios, a former first-round draft pick of the Carolina Hurricanes. His contributions to hockey were recognized with his induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame on November 8, 2013, and the IIHF Hall of Fame in 2018. Looking ahead, Chelios is set to be enshrined in the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame as part of the Class of 2025 on December 19, 2025, in Detroit.
