Chris Coons, born on September ninth, nineteen sixty-three, is a prominent American lawyer and politician who has served as the senior United States senator from Delaware since two thousand ten. A dedicated member of the Democratic Party, Coons previously held the position of county executive of New Castle County from two thousand five to two thousand ten, where he demonstrated his fiscal acumen by balancing the county budget with a surplus in fiscal year two thousand ten.
Raised in Hockessin, Delaware, Coons graduated from Amherst College in Massachusetts, where he was an active member of the Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity. He furthered his education with graduate degrees from Yale Divinity School and Yale Law School. His early career included a stint as a volunteer relief worker in Kenya, where he also attended classes at the University of Nairobi. Upon returning to the United States, he worked for the Coalition for the Homeless in New York and later served as a legal clerk before returning to Delaware in nineteen ninety-six.
In Delaware, Coons spent eight years as in-house counsel for a materials manufacturing company while also engaging with various nonprofit organizations. His political career began in earnest when he served as president of the New Castle County Council from two thousand one to two thousand five. In the two thousand ten Senate special election, he successfully defeated Republican nominee Christine O'Donnell to succeed Ted Kaufman, who had been appointed to the seat after Joe Biden's transition to the vice presidency.
Coons was elected to a full Senate term in two thousand fourteen and has since taken on significant roles, including vice chair of the Senate Ethics Committee and various committee assignments such as Appropriations, Foreign Relations, Judiciary, and Small Business and Entrepreneurship. He has also co-chaired the National Prayer Breakfasts in two thousand seventeen and two thousand nineteen and continues to co-chair the weekly Senate Prayer Breakfast.
As of January two thousand twenty-five, Coons became Delaware's senior senator and the dean of the state's congressional delegation following Tom Carper's retirement. His effectiveness as a legislator has been recognized, with The New York Times noting his role as an emissary for Joe Biden during the latter's two thousand twenty presidential campaign.
