A product of the Aston Villa Academy, Herd showcased his ability to play in various positions, including central defence, full-back, and central midfield. His talent earned him a place in the Australian national team, where he represented the under-20 squad and earned three caps with the senior team in two thousand fourteen.

Herd's professional journey began with Aston Villa, where he was loaned to several clubs, including Port Vale and Wycombe Wanderers in two thousand eight. He spent the two thousand nine to ten season on loan at Lincoln City, before making his Premier League debut in November two thousand ten. His breakthrough came in the two thousand eleven to twelve season, where he became a regular in the first team, although injuries kept him sidelined in the following years.

In September two thousand fourteen, Herd was loaned to Bolton Wanderers, followed by a stint at Wigan Athletic in January two thousand fifteen.
