Chris McCubbins

Chris McCubbins, born on November 22, 1945, in Enid, Oklahoma, was a remarkable athlete and educator who made significant contributions to the world of long-distance running. Competing for the Oklahoma State Cowboys track and field team, he showcased his exceptional talent by winning the gold medal in the men's 3000 meters steeplechase at the 1967 Pan American Games. This victory marked a pivotal moment in his athletic career, establishing him as a formidable competitor on the international stage.

In addition to his success at the Pan American Games, McCubbins excelled in collegiate athletics, clinching the title at the 1967 NCAA University Division Outdoor Track and Field Championships in the same event. His dedication to the sport led him to represent Canada at the 1976 Olympics, where he competed in the grueling 10,000 meter event, further solidifying his legacy as a long-distance runner.

Beyond his athletic achievements, McCubbins was a devoted educator, teaching for twenty-seven years at Kent Road School within the Winnipeg School Division. His passion for teaching and mentoring young minds was as profound as his commitment to athletics, leaving a lasting impact on his students.

Sadly, Chris McCubbins passed away on August 21, 2009, after a courageous six-month battle with leukemia. His life and legacy were honored in a biography titled 'Chris McCubbins, Running The Distance,' written by Joe Mackintosh, the brother of McCubbins' first wife, Marie, and published in 2013 by J Gordon Shillingford Publishing Inc of Winnipeg, Canada.
