Chris Waddle, born on December 14, 1960, is a celebrated English former professional football player and manager, renowned for his exceptional skills on the pitch. Nicknamed 'Magic Chris', he is widely regarded as one of the finest attacking midfielders in Europe. His illustrious career spanned from 1978 to 1998, during which he showcased his talents at several prominent clubs, including Newcastle United, Tottenham Hotspur, Olympique de Marseille, and Sheffield Wednesday.
Waddle's transfer from Tottenham to Marseille in 1989 for four and a half million pounds marked a significant milestone, making him the third most valuable player in the world at that time. His tenure at Marseille was particularly fruitful, as he clinched three consecutive Ligue 1 titles and played in the 1991 European Cup Final. His remarkable performances in the Premier League with Sheffield Wednesday earned him the prestigious FWA Footballer of the Year award for the 1992-93 season.
In addition to his club success, Waddle represented England with pride, earning sixty-two caps between 1985 and 1991. He was part of the national teams that reached the quarter-finals of the 1986 FIFA World Cup and the semi-finals of the 1990 World Cup, as well as competing in UEFA Euro 1988.
After retiring from professional football, Waddle transitioned into a media role, contributing as a commentator for BBC Radio 5 Live, where he covers the Premier League and Champions League. He also had a brief managerial stint with Burnley during the 1997-98 season but has not returned to coaching since. Even in his fifties, Waddle continued to play at a semi-professional level for Hallam in the Northern Counties East League, demonstrating his enduring passion for the game.
