Christopher Vokes

Christopher Vokes, born on April thirteenth, nineteen oh four in Armagh, Ireland, was a distinguished Canadian Army officer renowned for his leadership during World War II. He commanded the 2nd Canadian Infantry Brigade during the pivotal Allied invasion of Sicily, showcasing his strategic acumen early in the conflict.

As a major-general, Vokes played a crucial role in the Italian campaign, leading the 1st Canadian Infantry Division through intense battles, including the harrowing house-to-house combat in the Battle of Ortona. His leadership was instrumental in the advance north to the formidable Hitler Line, where his tactical decisions significantly impacted the course of the war.

In nineteen forty-four, Vokes took command of the 4th Canadian Armoured Division, participating in Operation Blockbuster. His controversial order to raze the German town of Friesoythe resulted in the destruction of approximately eighty-five to ninety percent of the town, utilizing the debris to repair the damaged local roads.

After the war, Vokes continued to serve with distinction, commanding the Canadian Army Occupation Force in Europe before returning to Canada for further assignments. He retired in nineteen fifty-nine and passed away in nineteen eighty-five at the age of eighty.
