Chrystia Freeland, born on August second, nineteen sixty-eight, is a prominent Canadian politician and journalist who has made significant contributions to the country's political landscape. She served as the tenth deputy prime minister of Canada from two thousand nineteen to two thousand twenty-four, representing the Liberal Party. Freeland was first elected as a member of Parliament for Toronto Centre in two thousand thirteen and later represented University—Rosedale from two thousand fifteen until two thousand twenty-six.
Freeland's political career includes a series of key cabinet positions during the premierships of Justin Trudeau and Mark Carney. After the two thousand fifteen federal election, she was appointed minister of international trade, later becoming the minister of foreign affairs in two thousand seventeen. In these roles, she played a crucial part in negotiating the Canada–United States–Mexico Agreement (CUSMA) and finalizing the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA).
In two thousand nineteen, Freeland ascended to the role of deputy prime minister and minister of intergovernmental affairs, a position she held until two thousand twenty when she became the minister of finance. As finance minister, she introduced four federal budgets, including vital federal aid measures during the COVID-19 pandemic, and made history as the first woman to serve in this capacity.
In December two thousand twenty-four, Freeland resigned from Cabinet on the day she was set to present the government's fall economic statement, a move that triggered a political crisis leading to Trudeau's resignation. She subsequently ran in the two thousand twenty-five Liberal leadership election, finishing second to Carney. In March two thousand twenty-five, Freeland returned to Cabinet as minister of transport and internal trade, serving until her resignation in September of the same year. Shortly thereafter, she was appointed as the special representative for the reconstruction of Ukraine.
On January fifth, two thousand twenty-six, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced Freeland's appointment as an unpaid economic adviser to his government. However, she announced her intention to resign from both her special representative role and Parliament, with her resignations taking effect on January ninth. In July two thousand twenty-six, Freeland is set to become the warden of Rhodes House and chief executive officer of the Rhodes Trust.
