Chun Doo-hwan, born on January 18, 1931, in Hapcheon County during the Empire of Japan, was a prominent South Korean army general and politician. He graduated from the Korea Military Academy in 1955 with a bachelor's degree in science. Chun's political career took a dramatic turn following the assassination of President Park Chung Hee in 1979, leading him to orchestrate a military coup on December 12 of that year.

As the fifth president of South Korea from 1980 to 1988, Chun established the Fifth Republic of Korea on March 3, 1981. His rule was marked by a military dictatorship characterized by broad executive powers and extreme measures to maintain control, including the declaration of martial law and the establishment of a concentration camp for
