Chuy García

Jesús G. "Chuy" García, born on April 12, 1956, is a prominent American politician who has made significant contributions to both local and national politics. Since 2019, he has served as the U.S. representative for Illinois's 4th district, representing the Democratic Party. His political journey has seen him hold various influential positions, including serving on the Cook County Board of Commissioners, the Illinois Senate, and the Chicago City Council.

García's political career began in 1986 when he was first elected to the Chicago City Council, where he became known as a steadfast ally of Mayor Harold Washington. In 1992, he made history by becoming the first Mexican-American member of the Illinois State Senate. Although he faced defeat in his reelection bid in 1998, his commitment to public service remained unwavering.

In 2010, García was elected to the Cook County Board of Commissioners, where he was appointed floor leader by Board President Toni Preckwinkle. His ambition led him to run for mayor of Chicago in 2015, where he finished second and forced a runoff against incumbent Rahm Emanuel. García later won a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives in the 2018 election, succeeding his ally Luis Gutiérrez.

Despite his efforts, García's second bid for mayor in 2023 was unsuccessful, as he placed fourth in the first round. However, he endorsed Brandon Johnson, who went on to win the runoff election. On November 3, 2025, García announced he would not seek reelection in 2026, a decision that sparked criticism and led to a resolution being passed by the House of Representatives.
