Cima da Conegliano

Giovanni Battista Cima, known as Cima da Conegliano, was born in the year fourteen fifty-nine and emerged as a prominent figure in the Italian Renaissance art scene. Primarily active in Venice, Cima's work is often associated with the Venetian school, yet he drew significant inspiration from the techniques of Antonello da Messina. This influence is particularly evident in his masterful use of landscape backgrounds and the serene ambiance that permeates his paintings.

Throughout his career, Cima maintained a consistent artistic style that evolved little over time. His oeuvre predominantly features religious themes, crafted on a smaller scale suitable for domestic spaces rather than grand churches. In addition to his sacred subjects, he also explored mythological themes, albeit in a limited capacity, often producing small-scale works.

Cima was known for his penchant for revisiting popular subjects, creating multiple versions with subtle variations. His depictions of the Madonna and Child are particularly notable, showcasing several iterations of a composition that includes a standing infant Jesus, a motif he frequently revisited in his artistic practice.
