Cimabue

Giovanni Cimabue, born around 1240 in Florence, was a pioneering Italian painter and mosaic designer. Known also as Cenni di Pepo or Cenni di Pepi, he played a crucial role in the evolution of Italian art during the late medieval period.

While heavily influenced by Byzantine artistic traditions, Cimabue is celebrated for his significant departure from the Italo-Byzantine style. His works are characterized by more lifelike proportions and a sophisticated application of shading, which adds depth and volume to his figures, setting a new standard in the realm of medieval art.

Art historian Giorgio Vasari famously claimed that Cimabue was the mentor of Giotto, who is often regarded as the first great artist of the Italian Proto-Renaissance. However, contemporary scholars frequently challenge this assertion, referencing earlier sources that suggest a more complex relationship between the two artists.
