Cindy Kiro, born on July second, nineteen fifty-eight, is a distinguished New Zealand public-health academic and administrator. She has made history as the twenty-second governor-general of New Zealand, a position she has held since October twenty-first, twenty twenty-one. Kiro is notably the first Māori woman and the third individual of Māori descent to assume this prestigious role.
Prior to her appointment as governor-general, Kiro served as the Chief Executive of the Royal Society Te Apārangi. Her extensive career includes significant roles such as the Children's Commissioner, head of the School of Public Health at Massey University, and head of Te Kura Māori at Victoria University of Wellington. Additionally, she was the Pro-Vice Chancellor (Māori) at the University of Auckland, showcasing her commitment to education and public health.
During her tenure as governor-general, Kiro has responded to significant events, including the death of Queen Elizabeth II. She has also represented New Zealand on the international stage, participating in notable occasions such as the Platinum Jubilee and the state funeral of Queen Elizabeth II, as well as the coronation of King Charles III in the United Kingdom.
