Clara Hughes

Clara Hughes, born on September 27, 1972, is a remarkable Canadian athlete who has made her mark in both speed skating and cycling. With an impressive tally of Olympic medals, she stands out as one of the few athletes to have competed in both the Summer and Winter Olympic Games. Hughes achieved significant success at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, where she became the first Canadian woman to win a medal in road cycling, securing two bronze medals.

Her prowess continued in the Winter Olympics, where she earned a total of four medals: one gold, one silver, and two bronze, across three different Games. This remarkable achievement makes her one of only seven individuals to have podium finishes in both the Summer and Winter versions of the Olympics, and she is the only athlete to have won multiple medals in both disciplines.

Beyond her athletic accomplishments, Hughes is also known for her humanitarian efforts. She has been actively involved with Right To Play, an organization that uses sports to foster youth development in disadvantaged areas. Following her gold medal victory in 2006, she generously donated ten thousand dollars to support this cause.

She has received numerous accolades, including being named Female Athlete of the Year by Speed Skating Canada in 2004 and receiving the International Olympic Committee's Sport and Community Trophy in 2006. In 2010, she was honored with a star on the Canadian Walk of Fame and was inducted into Canada's Sports Hall of Fame.
