Claude Forget

Claude E. Forget, born on May 28, 1936, in Montreal, Quebec, is a distinguished Canadian economist and former politician. He holds a master's degree in public finances from the prestigious London School of Economics, complemented by a bachelor's degree in economics. In 1959, he was admitted to the Barreau du Québec, marking the beginning of a notable career in both academia and public service.

Forget's foray into politics began in 1973 when he was elected to the National Assembly of Quebec representing the riding of Saint-Laurent as a member of the Liberal Party. His political acumen led him to serve as the Minister of Social Affairs from 1973 to 1976 under Premier Robert Bourassa. He successfully retained his seat in the subsequent elections of 1976 and 1981, before resigning on November 17, 1981.

In 1984, Forget was appointed as the chairman of the Commission of Inquiry on Unemployment Insurance, further showcasing his commitment to addressing economic issues. His contributions to Canadian society were recognized in 1991 when he was named an Officer of the Order of Canada. Throughout his career, he has been known for his insightful observations, famously stating, 'Our political system itself reaches a position of equilibrium by generating such dysfunctional incentives.'
