Claudia Jones

Claudia Jones, born on February fifteenth, nineteen fifteen, in Trinidad and Tobago, was a remarkable journalist and political activist. Her early life took a significant turn when she migrated to the United States with her family, where she embraced her identity as a Communist political activist, feminist, and Black nationalist. To navigate the challenges of her political beliefs, she adopted the name 'Jones' as a form of self-protective disinformation.

In the face of political persecution against Communists in the United States, Jones was deported in nineteen fifty-five. This pivotal moment led her to the United Kingdom, where she quickly became an integral part of the Communist Party of Great Britain, a commitment she maintained for the rest of her life.

In nineteen fifty-eight, Claudia Jones made a significant impact by founding Britain's first major Black newspaper, the West Indian Gazette, which operated until nineteen sixty-five. Her influence extended beyond journalism; starting in nineteen fifty-nine, she organized a series of indoor Caribbean carnivals that would later inspire the Notting Hill Carnival, now recognized as the second-largest annual carnival in the world.
