Cleanth Brooks

Cleanth Brooks, born on October sixteenth, nineteen oh six, was a prominent American literary critic and professor whose influence reshaped the landscape of poetry education in the United States. He is best remembered for his pivotal role in the New Criticism movement during the mid-twentieth century, which emphasized the importance of close reading and the intricate structure of poetry.

His seminal works, including The Well Wrought Urn: Studies in the Structure of Poetry published in nineteen forty-seven and Modern Poetry and the Tradition from nineteen thirty-nine, advocate for the significance of ambiguity and paradox in understanding poetic texts. Through his writings, Brooks articulated the principles of formalist criticism, focusing on what he termed 'the interior life of a poem.'

In addition to his contributions to poetry, Brooks was a leading critic of Southern literature, producing essential analyses of the works of William Faulkner. He also co-founded the influential literary journal The Southern Review alongside Robert Penn Warren, further solidifying his impact on American literary criticism.
