Cleitus the Black

Cleitus the Black, a distinguished military officer in the Macedonian army, played a pivotal role in the campaigns led by Alexander the Great. Born in three hundred seventy-five BC, he was the son of Dropidas and the brother of Lanike, who served as Alexander's nurse. His lineage connected him to notable figures, including his grandfather Critias.

Cleitus is perhaps best remembered for his heroic act at the Battle of the Granicus in three hundred thirty-four BC, where he saved Alexander's life, showcasing his bravery and loyalty. This act solidified his status as a trusted officer within the ranks of Alexander's formidable army.

However, the bond between Cleitus and Alexander would take a tragic turn. In a drunken quarrel six years after the battle, Cleitus met his untimely demise at the hands of the very leader he had once saved. This incident marked a poignant moment in the history of Alexander's conquests, illustrating the complexities of friendship and loyalty in the face of ambition.

To distinguish him from another officer, Cleitus was given the epithet 'the Black,' a name that would echo through history as a reminder of his contributions and the tragic end to his life.
