Clive Carruthers

Clive Carruthers, born in 1891, was a distinguished Canadian classicist whose academic journey began at Corpus Christi College, Oxford. As a Rhodes Scholar, he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1916, laying the foundation for a lifelong dedication to classical studies.

His service in the Canadian Army marked a significant chapter in his life, after which he briefly taught at the University of Alberta. In 1921, Carruthers joined McGill University in Montreal, where he would leave an indelible mark on the field of classical philology.

From 1929 to 1950, he served as a professor of classical philology, eventually becoming the department chairman in 1950. His tenure at McGill culminated in his role as the Hiram Mills professor of classics from 1950 to 1961, during which he inspired countless students and scholars.

After retiring in 1961, Carruthers continued to contribute to academia by publishing scholarly papers on Hittite etymology. He also showcased his literary talents through Latin translations of Lewis Carroll's beloved works, 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland' and 'Through the Looking-Glass.'
