Cniva, a formidable Gothic king, emerged as a significant figure in the tumultuous landscape of the Roman Empire during the mid-third century AD. His reign, though shrouded in uncertainty regarding its exact timeline, marked a pivotal moment in the history of Gothic incursions into Roman territories.

In the year 250, Cniva orchestrated a successful siege of Philippopolis, known today as Plovdiv in Bulgaria. This victory not only showcased his military prowess but also set the stage for a dramatic confrontation with the Roman forces.

The following year, in 251, Cniva achieved a historic milestone by defeating Emperor Decius and his son Herennius Etruscus at the Battle of Abritus. This battle was particularly notable as it marked the first instance of a Roman Emperor being slain in combat against foreign adversaries, a testament to Cniva's strategic acumen and the ferocity of his forces.
