Cochise

Cochise, born in 1812, was a prominent traditional leader and military chief of the Chiricahua Apache. He was the principal nantan of the Chokonen band, a local group within the Chiricahui, and played a pivotal role in the Apache Wars.

As a key war leader, Cochise led a significant uprising that began in 1861. His leadership during this tumultuous period was marked by fierce resistance against encroachment on Apache lands, and his efforts persisted until a peace treaty was finally negotiated in 1872.

His legacy endures, not only through the history of the Apache people but also in the naming of Cochise County, which honors his contributions and leadership. Cochise remains a symbol of strength and resilience in the face of adversity.
