Conchita Martínez

Conchita Martínez, born on April 16, 1972, is a distinguished Spanish former professional tennis player and current coach, renowned for her remarkable achievements on the court. She made history in 1994 by becoming the first Spaniard to clinch the women's singles title at Wimbledon, a milestone that marked a significant moment in Spanish tennis. Throughout her illustrious career, Martínez reached the finals of major tournaments, finishing as the runner-up at the 1998 Australian Open and the 2000 French Open.

Martínez's career was characterized by her impressive ranking, achieving a career-high of world No. 2 in October 1995. She consistently demonstrated her prowess in the sport, remaining in the year-end top ten for an impressive nine years. Over her eighteen-year career, she amassed thirty-three singles and thirteen doubles titles, alongside three Olympic medals, solidifying her legacy in tennis.

In addition to her playing career, Martínez has made significant contributions as a coach. She served as the Spanish Fed Cup team captain from 2013 to 2017 and led the Spanish Davis Cup team from 2015 to 2017, successfully guiding them back into the top-tier World Group. Her coaching accolades include a part-time role with Garbiñe Muguruza, leading her to victory at the 2017 Wimbledon Championships, and a full-time coaching position with Karolína Plíšková through 2018 and 2019.

In November 2019, Martínez resumed her full-time coaching role with Muguruza, and her exceptional guidance earned her the 2021 WTA Coach of the Year award. Currently, she is coaching Mirra Andreeva, continuing her commitment to nurturing the next generation of tennis talent. In recognition of her outstanding contributions to the sport, Martínez was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 2020.
