Connie Smith

Constance June Stuart, known to the world as Connie Smith, was born on August 14, 1941. An influential figure in American country music, her contralto vocals have left a significant mark on the genre, inspiring countless female artists. Discovered in 1963, Smith signed with RCA Victor Records the following year, where she would remain until 1973, establishing herself as a formidable talent in the industry.

Her debut single, 'Once a Day,' not only reached number one on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart in November 1964 but also earned a nomination for Best Female Country Vocal Performance at the Grammy Awards. This track held the top position for an impressive eight weeks, a record that would stand for decades. Although Taylor Swift's 'We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together' eventually broke Smith's long-standing record in 2012, her legacy as a pioneering female artist in country music remains intact.

Throughout the 1960s and mid-1970s, Smith continued to achieve success with nineteen additional top-10 hits, including memorable songs like 'Then and Only Then' and 'Cincinnati, Ohio.' As the 1970s progressed, she began to focus more on gospel music, reflecting her deepening commitment to her faith. This shift led her to spend more time with her five children, resulting in a semi-retirement from music in 1979.

After a brief return to recording in the mid-1980s, Smith made a permanent comeback in the 1990s, collaborating with Marty Stuart, who later became her husband in 1997. This partnership reignited her musical career, leading to her first studio album in twenty years, which received critical acclaim. Over the years, Smith has garnered eleven Grammy nominations and has been recognized by prestigious organizations, including the Country Music Hall of Fame, into which she was inducted in 2012.
