Conrad III of Germany

Conrad III of Germany, born in 1093, was a prominent figure of the Hohenstaufen dynasty. His political career began as Duke of Franconia from 1116 to 1120, and he later became the anti-king to Lothair III from 1127 to 1135. His most notable role was as King of the Romans in the Holy Roman Empire from 1138 until his death in 1152.

As the son of Duke Frederick I of Swabia and Agnes, daughter of Emperor Henry IV, Conrad's reign was marked by significant historical events, including the onset of the conflicts between the Guelphs and Ghibellines. His involvement in the ill-fated Second Crusade alongside Louis VII saw him face defeat at Doryleum, leading to a return to Constantinople due to illness.

After recuperating, Conrad continued his journey to Jerusalem, where he encountered a series of unsuccessful sieges. Upon returning from the Crusade, he found himself embroiled in disputes regarding Welf VI's claim to the Duchy of Bavaria.

On his deathbed, Conrad made a pivotal decision by designating his nephew, Frederick Barbarossa, as his successor, rather than his own son, Frederick IV, Duke of Swabia. This choice would have lasting implications for the future of the Holy Roman Empire.
