Constance Fenimore Woolson, born on March fifth, eighteen forty, was a distinguished American novelist, poet, and short story writer. In eighteen ninety-three, Woolson made a significant move to Venice, where she rented an elegant apartment in the Palazzo Orio Semitecolo Benzon, overlooking the picturesque Grand Canal. This period marked a profound chapter in her life, as she grappled with personal struggles, including influenza and depression.

Tragically, in January eighteen ninety-four, Woolson's life came to a sudden and heartbreaking end. Under circumstances that remain unclear, she either jumped or fell from a fourth-story window of her Venetian apartment, surviving for approximately one hour after the fall. Her untimely death left a void in the literary community, but her works continue to resonate with readers today.
