Constantin Hansen

Constantin Hansen, born on November third, eighteen oh four, was a prominent painter during the Golden Age of Danish Painting. His artistic journey was deeply intertwined with his passion for literature and mythology, which significantly influenced his work.

Inspired by the art historian Niels Laurits Høyen, Hansen sought to recreate a national historical narrative through his paintings, drawing particularly from Norse mythology. This ambition led him to explore themes that resonated with the cultural identity of Denmark.

Throughout his career, Hansen produced numerous altarpieces and portraits, showcasing his versatility as an artist. Among his notable works is the monumental oil painting titled 'The Danish Constituent Assembly' (Den grundlovgivende Rigsforsamling), which he created between eighteen sixty-one and eighteen sixty-five, reflecting his commitment to capturing significant moments in Danish history.
