Constantin von Alvensleben

Constantin von Alvensleben, born on August twenty-sixth, eighteen oh nine, in Eichenbarleben, Province of Saxony, was a distinguished military officer who rose through the ranks of the Prussian and later Imperial German army. He began his military career as a second lieutenant in the Prussian Guards after entering the cadet corps on July twenty-seventh, eighteen twenty-seven. His dedication and skill led to a series of promotions, becoming first lieutenant in eighteen forty-two, captain in eighteen forty-eight, and major on the Great General Staff by eighteen fifty-three.

Alvensleben's military prowess was evident during the Second Schleswig War, where he was promoted to major-general in eighteen sixty-four. His leadership shone during the Austro-Prussian War of eighteen sixty-six, particularly at the action of Soor on June twenty-eighth, where he distinguished himself. He played a crucial role at the Battle of Königgrätz, leading the advanced guard of the Guards Corps and later taking command of his division after the fall of General Wilhelm Hiller von Gärtringen.

In eighteen seventy, as the Franco-Prussian War erupted, Alvensleben took command of the III Army Corps, part of the 2nd German army. However, his tenure was marred by questionable decisions during the battles at Vionville-Mars-la-Tour, which resulted in significant casualties. Despite this, he was awarded the prestigious Order of the Black Eagle shortly before his death in eighteen ninety-two.

In recognition of his contributions, the Prussian Infantry Regiment Nr. fifty-two in Cottbus was named in his honor, solidifying his legacy within the military history of Germany.
