Corinne Rey-Bellet

Corinne Rey-Bellet, born on August second, nineteen seventy-two, was a prominent Swiss alpine skier known for her remarkable achievements on the slopes. She made her mark in the skiing world by sharing a World Championship silver medal in the downhill event at St. Moritz in two thousand three, tying with fellow skier Alexandra Meissnitzer. Throughout her career, Rey-Bellet secured a total of five World Cup victories, including three in downhill and two in super-G.

One of her most notable accomplishments came on January sixteenth, nineteen ninety-nine, when she achieved a historic double win at St Anton am Arlberg, becoming the first and only female skier to accomplish this feat on the same day in the Alpine World Cup. Unfortunately, her career was cut short in two thousand three due to a series of injuries to her right knee, leading to her retirement from competitive skiing.

Tragically, Rey-Bellet's life was marred by a horrific event on April thirtieth, two thousand six, when her husband, Gerold Stadler, murdered her and her brother shortly after their separation. Stadler, a captain in the Swiss Armed Forces, took his own life two days later. This shocking incident garnered significant public attention and sparked discussions on domestic violence and gun control in Switzerland, ultimately leading to changes in regulations regarding military ammunition.

In recognition of her legacy, Rey-Bellet was honored by the Swiss government in two thousand twenty-one as part of the Hommage 2021 project, which celebrates women who have made significant contributions to Swiss history.
