Cory Booker, born on April twenty-seventh, nineteen sixty-nine, in Washington, D.C., is a prominent American politician and lawyer. Raised in Harrington Park, New Jersey, he has made significant strides in public service, currently serving as the senior United States senator from New Jersey since his election in 2013. A member of the Democratic Party, Booker holds the distinction of being the first African-American U.S. senator from New Jersey.
Booker's political journey began in Newark, where he served on the Municipal Council for the Central Ward from nineteen ninety-eight to two thousand two. During his tenure, he notably doubled the affordable housing under development and significantly reduced the city budget deficit from one hundred eighty million dollars to seventy-three million dollars.
In the U.S. Senate, Booker has continued to make history, becoming the first senator to testify against another senator during the confirmation hearing of attorney general nominee Jeff Sessions in two thousand seventeen. He was elected to the Senate in a special election in two thousand thirteen and has since been reelected in two thousand fourteen and two thousand twenty. Following Bob Menendez's resignation in August twenty-four, twenty-four, Booker became New Jersey's senior senator.
In addition to his legislative work, Booker ran for the Democratic nomination in the two thousand twenty U.S. presidential election, suspending his campaign on January thirteenth, twenty twenty. He is also known for delivering the longest speech in U.S. Senate history, lasting twenty-five hours and five minutes, in protest of Donald Trump's second presidency.
