Cristina Calderón

Cristina Calderón, born on May twenty-fourth, nineteen twenty-eight, is a remarkable Chilean figure known for her multifaceted contributions as a singer, ethnographer, artisan, writer, cultural activist, and lexicographer. Her life is a testament to the rich cultural heritage of the Yahgan people, an indigenous group from Tierra del Fuego.

As the last living full-blooded Yahgan person following the passing of her sister Úrsula in two thousand five, Calderón has dedicated her life to preserving the Yahgan language and culture. In two thousand four, she and her sister-in-law Emelinda Acuña were recognized as the only remaining native speakers of this ancient language, highlighting the urgency of their cultural preservation efforts.
