Croesus

Croesus, the last king of Lydia, ruled from five hundred eighty-five or five hundred sixty-one BC until his defeat in five hundred forty-seven BC. His reign came to an end during the siege of Sardis, where he faced the formidable Persian king, Cyrus the Great. According to the ancient historian Herodotus, Croesus's rule lasted for a total of fourteen years, marking a significant period in the history of Lydia.

Renowned for his immense wealth, Croesus became a legendary figure in the ancient world. Both Herodotus and Pausanias noted that his lavish gifts were preserved at Delphi, a testament to his opulence and generosity. His riches were so famous that they became synonymous with wealth itself, leading to the phrase 'rich as Croesus' in later cultures.
