Cydonie Mothersille

Cydonie Mothersille, born on March 19, 1978, in Jamaica, is a distinguished former track and field sprinter who represented the Cayman Islands. At the onset of her athletic career, she specialized in the 100 meters, but as time progressed, the 200 meters became her primary event. Over the course of her career, she proudly represented her nation at four Olympic Games from 1996 to 2008, six World Championships in Athletics, and three Commonwealth Games.

Among her notable achievements, Mothersille earned a bronze medal in the 200 meters at the 2001 World Championships in Athletics, marking a historic moment as it was the first World Championship medal for the Cayman Islands. This achievement came several years after the event due to doping disqualifications of other athletes. Additionally, she secured a gold medal at the 2010 Commonwealth Games and a silver at the 2003 Pan American Games, solidifying her status as one of the top sprinters of her time.

Her journey in athletics began when she moved to Grand Cayman at the age of seven. While attending high school, her talent was recognized by her physical education teacher, Evelyn Rockette, who encouraged her to pursue track and field. Mothersille made her mark in the CARIFTA Games, achieving a remarkable sprint double in the 100 and 200 meters in 1996, for which she was awarded the Austin Sealy Trophy for the most outstanding athlete.

During her collegiate years at Clemson University, she showcased her versatility by competing in the 100 meters, 200 meters, 4 × 100 meters relay, and 4 × 400 meters relay, contributing to the success of the Clemson All American teams. In 2011, she was recognized as the highest-paid athlete from the Cayman Islands, earning eighty-five thousand dollars. Cydonie Mothersille is married to Ato Stephens and was coached by Henry Rolle throughout her illustrious career.
