Cynthia Flood

Cynthia Flood, born on September seventeenth, nineteen forty, is a distinguished Canadian novelist and short-story writer, renowned for her contributions to literature and activism. Growing up in Toronto as the daughter of novelist Luella Creighton and historian Donald Creighton, she pursued her education at the University of Toronto and the University of California, Berkeley. After spending several years in the United States, she married Maurice Flood and relocated to Vancouver, British Columbia, in nineteen sixty-nine.

Throughout her career, Flood has been an active participant in various social movements, including socialist, feminist, anti-war, and environmental causes. While serving as an English instructor at Langara College from nineteen seventy-one to two thousand one, she was also involved in the faculty union. In the nineteen seventies, her husband Maurice came out as gay and became a prominent figure in the Gay Alliance Toward Equality. Together, they campaigned for the inclusion of gay rights in the federal New Democratic Party's platform, a cause Flood continued to support even after their separation in nineteen eighty-one.

As the eighties progressed, Flood shifted her focus towards writing, producing a body of work that has garnered critical acclaim. Her first three collections of short fiction, including 'The Animals in Their Elements' and 'My Father Took a Cake to France,' established her as a significant voice in Canadian literature. The title story from her second collection won the Journey Prize in nineteen ninety, and her novel 'Making a Stone of the Heart' was nominated for the City of Vancouver Book Award in two thousand two.

Flood's literary achievements continued with her collection 'The English Stories,' published in April two thousand nine, which features stories set in nineteen fifties England. Her subsequent works, including 'Red Girl Rat Boy' and 'What Can You Do,' have been recognized as notable contributions to contemporary literature. In two thousand seventeen, Biblioasis published her fifth collection of short fictions, and most recently, a selected book titled 'You Are Here' was released, showcasing twenty of her best stories from her five collections.
